"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27
When coal was king, Fairmont, West Virginia, was one of its throne rooms. Things have changed. Almost all of the mines are closed now, business is depressed, black lung has taken many miners in mid-life, and their kids have moved to greener pastures. Those left behind are doing their best to hold their homes together on a wing and a prayer. Since 1999, SPC has partnered with Mission to the World, the local PCA church, and one-week-missionaries from all over the US (and Dornoch, Scotland) to help these dear neighbors get ready for their next harsh West Virginia winter. We have scraped and painted. We have torn off and replaced roofs. We have repaired decks, doors, stairways, plumbing, and electrical. We have installed insulation, windows, bathrooms, soffits, and gutters. And all this, we have done in Jesus' name and for His glory. Along the way, He has taught us much about ourselves and about our Savior. He has blessed us with richer, fuller faith and with many new friends. For lots of us, Fairmont is the best week of the summer.
