If you’re a religious person – as I’ve been all my life – being brought up in the best church circles, you have been appalled, no doubt, at the suggestion that you are anything other than a good person… But here’s the thing: what you’ve just heard from Paul is your defense . It’s your defense not in the sense that it defends the false assurance of your religious system, but it defends you in that it demolishes what is untrue and obliges you and me to ask, “If that isn’t the way to God, what is?” This is the torpedo – isn’t it? – which either sinks the boat or saves it.
