What does it take to grow in the Christian life? Let’s face it: we’re not half the follower of God this man was. And you can, of course, play that down as we do as evangelicals, “Oh, I haven’t made the grade. No one makes the grade.” But that’s not the Gospel. The Gospel says someone had to make the grade; someone had to keep the Law. And the Gospel says for our crimes, someone must pay. The problem with legalism is not that it makes the Law and God’s standards too hard but that it makes them too easy. It’s the shocking impossibility of what perfect means – that as you hit again and again against your own sin and failure (what this man couldn’t look at) it will make you begin to shake you out of your domesticated, tiny view of what Jesus has done.
