It’s a tiny detail in our eyes really. The same sacred vessels which Nebuchadnezzar had taken but protected from the Temple in Jerusalem, his son in drunken carelessness orders brought from the treasury and used to service his party. You see it wasn’t that the goblets themselves had any special quality – but that God had chosen certain things and certain people for his own exclusive use. To abuse these things was to abuse Him. By doing this Belshazzar was throwing down the gauntlet: “in Babylon, over me and my people,” he was saying – “this God has no reality, no power.”
