They said ‘No’ to food from the King’s table. Not because there was any Levitical law against it – there wasn’t – it was more a question of open loyalty to Nebuchadnezzar himself. They had to draw the line somewhere. I think this is here because the Lord has put us in the world not chiefly to fight the big fights, but to forge these small relationships where we live. Openly and humbly before people, offering these little lines we’ll draw in the sand. Not because we’re the thought police, but because we’re saying this Jesus is real.
