Luke 9:59 – 60 and John 11:38 – 44 • Series: The Hard Sayings of Jesus • Easter, April 4, 2010
Jesus presses this: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die, do YOU believe this?” And her response is fascinating – she doesn’t say what we would say. She doesn’t say ‘Yes, I can believe that. Like I could believe in six impossible things before breakfast.’ No, she says I believe YOU. In other words, she trusts Him, even though she has no idea what he means and how he’s going to make it happen. And for some of you – who’ve been looking for God: what Martha says is a crucial bridge – because you may not be able to take it all in, you’re not sure about a lot of questions but you can say this Easter to Jesus, “I believe you, I trust you, I think you’re God’s Son.” And life starts to break in.
