My vicar, when I was growing up, told us that this was simply Greek logic: if it’s the Cross of Jesus which you are resisting, the only means of your forgiveness – then to resist the Cross is in itself an unforgivable sin. You have cut off, as Eugene Peterson puts it, the very tree limb on which you are sitting.
