Revelation 3:1 – 6 • Series: Letters through the Looking Glass • August 16, 2009
We’re quite happy, most of us. We don’t want the revolution of Christ because we’ve heard Bonhoeffer: “When Christ bids a man come and follow him, he bids him come and die.” I wonder if we don’t think that we’ve somehow socially evolved out of the need for this kind of commitment? Look at our freedoms, look at our success, none of us are being thrown to lions – but isn’t that precisely the kind of things they were saying in Sardis – in a church where the revolution had been sucked out of them by a comfort culture? It would be a shame, wouldn’t it, for Christians in a nation like ours – whose history has been so positively shaped by revolutionary ideals – to lose the heart of their own faith and following Jesus.
