“Antipas wasn’t a victim. In dying for Jesus, he was passionately expressing the Gospel. No one would have done that in the ancient world – not willingly, not even for the Empire or some frenzied cult – yet time again the witness of the Church was that they were willing to give up their own interests. God so loved the world – in the face of the blasphemy, the cruelty, and the wickedness of a city like like Pergamum, like New York, like Richmond perhaps, that He gave his only Son – and He gives those who belong to his Son.”
